In 1987 the following dissertation was presented by Philip Colley as part of a BA Honours course in Politics and East Asian Studies at Newcastle University in the UK. Research began in 1985. It is the first ever academic work addressing the story of Gareth Jones and contains one of the earliest post-war references to the 'forgotten' Great Soviet famine of 1932/33.
